Digital marketing predictions for India in 2024: what to prepare for

Based on where platforms and consumer behaviour ended up in 2023, here are the developments Indian marketers should be ready for in 2024.

Digital marketing predictions for India in 2024: what to prepare for

Making predictions in digital marketing is a humbling exercise. I made a few last December that turned out reasonably accurate and a couple that did not. With that caveat, here are the developments I expect to matter for Indian marketers in 2024, based on the trajectories I am watching as 2023 closes.

First-party data will become a genuine competitive advantage

Third-party cookie deprecation in Chrome is finally scheduled for 2024 after multiple delays. Google plans to phase out third-party cookies for 100 percent of Chrome users in the second half of 2024.

For Indian advertisers, this means that businesses with strong first-party data infrastructure (CRM data tied to ad accounts, email lists with purchase history, WhatsApp broadcast lists with engagement data) will have a targeting advantage over competitors relying on platform-side audience signals.

Building your email list and WhatsApp list in 2024 is not just a direct marketing strategy. It is building an asset that will matter more as third-party data becomes less reliable.

AI-assisted content will need to be better, not more

The flood of AI-generated content in 2023 will likely result in Google's algorithms getting better at identifying thin, undifferentiated content. The Indian websites that rank well in 2024 will be ones that combine genuine expertise with efficient production, not ones that published 500 AI articles without editorial judgment.

For Indian marketers, the strategy shift is from volume to depth. Fewer, better articles that genuinely help a specific Indian audience will outperform bulk content strategies. First-hand experience, original data, and India-specific context are increasingly important ranking signals.

Short-form video will require Indian businesses to get serious

In 2023, many Indian businesses experimented with Reels and Shorts. In 2024, the brands that built consistent short-form video presence will start pulling ahead of those that did not.

The barriers have lowered. A phone camera, a clean background, and 90 seconds of genuine expertise is enough. The content does not need to be produced like a TV commercial. Indian audiences on short-form platforms respond well to authentic, direct communication.

WhatsApp marketing will mature as a channel

As more Indian businesses access the WhatsApp Business API through affordable tools, the channel will get more competitive. The businesses that will win on WhatsApp are the ones that provide value in their broadcasts, not just promotional offers.

Segmented WhatsApp broadcasts (different messages to different customer groups based on their purchase history or interests) will outperform generic blasts as the channel becomes noisier. Invest in the segmentation infrastructure now.

Performance Max will either improve transparency or see pullback from advertisers

The frustration with PMax's opacity is real and widespread among Indian advertisers. Google has committed to improving reporting and control. If they deliver in 2024, PMax adoption will grow. If transparency remains limited, more sophisticated advertisers will continue preferring controlled Search and Shopping campaigns.

Watch for updates to PMax reporting in the first half of 2024. If asset-group-level conversion reporting and placement-level data become available, the case for PMax gets much stronger.

India-specific regulatory changes to watch

India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act was passed in August 2023. The rules under this act are expected to be published in 2024, and they will have implications for how businesses collect and use personal data for marketing.

Indian marketers need to be preparing for DPDP compliance. The broad outlines are clear: consent for data collection will need to be more explicit, data retention limits will apply, and marketing databases will need to meet new standards. Get ahead of this rather than scrambling when implementation dates are announced.

The consolidation of Indian martech stacks

Indian businesses have historically used a patchwork of disconnected tools: a separate email tool, a separate CRM, a separate WhatsApp tool, and manual data sharing between them. 2024 will see more Indian businesses consolidating to integrated platforms or investing in proper integration between their tools.

CRMs like HubSpot, Zoho, and Freshsales have strong Indian market presence and are increasingly integrating with WhatsApp and Indian payment systems. Businesses that move to integrated stacks will have better attribution data and more efficient marketing operations.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO still worth investing in for Indian businesses in 2024?

Yes. Organic search generates highly qualified traffic at lower marginal cost than paid channels. The approach needs to evolve toward deeper content and first-hand expertise, but the channel remains among the highest ROI digital investments for most Indian businesses.

Will paid advertising become too expensive for Indian SMBs in 2024?

CPCs have been rising year over year in most Indian categories. The businesses that survive rising ad costs are the ones with better landing page conversion rates, longer customer lifetime values, and more efficient sales processes. Improving these factors is the answer to rising costs, not abandoning paid channels.

What should an Indian business prioritise if it can only focus on one thing in 2024?

Build your first-party data asset. Email list, WhatsApp list, CRM data tied to your marketing channels. This is the foundation that makes every other marketing activity more effective and is an asset you own regardless of how platforms change.
