Backlink building for Indian websites: what actually works

Getting backlinks in India is different from generic link building advice. Here is what works for Indian businesses building domain authority from scratch.

Backlink building for Indian websites: what actually works

Backlinks remain one of the strongest signals Google uses to rank pages. A link from a credible website to yours tells Google your content is worth referencing. But most advice on link building is written for US or European markets. Indian websites face a slightly different situation, and tactics need adjusting.

Why Indian link building is different

The Indian web has fewer high-authority publications compared to the US. There are strong national outlets (The Hindu, Economic Times, YourStory, Inc42) but mid-tier regional and industry publications are less developed. This means you sometimes have to work harder for each link, and spammy link farms are more visible in Indian search results because quality is lower overall.

The good news: the bar for earning a genuine link is also lower in many Indian niches. A well-researched blog post about GST compliance for small businesses, a free tool for EMI calculation, or a local business directory listing can earn links that would be ignored in more competitive markets.

Guest posting on Indian publications

Guest posting still works in India. YourStory, Inc42, Entrepreneur India, and many industry-specific blogs accept contributor posts. The key is pitching articles that are genuinely useful, not thinly veiled advertisements for your services.

I have seen local chartered accountants get links from YourStory by writing about common mistakes in startup compliance. A real estate firm in Hyderabad got mentions in housing blogs by publishing data about rental trends in specific neighbourhoods. The pitch needs to be content-first.

Start by reading the publication. Understand what they cover. Pitch a topic that serves their audience, not yours. Mention one or two of their recent articles to show you have actually done this. A personalised pitch converts far better than a copy-paste email.

Building links through local and industry citations

Indian businesses often ignore local citation building, but it adds up. Get listed on Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMart, TradeIndia, and your industry's relevant directories. These are not high-authority links, but they establish your business's NAP (name, address, phone) consistency which matters for local SEO.

For B2B companies, listings on platforms like Clutch or GoodFirms with client reviews can earn links that carry real weight. I have seen software companies in Pune get significant traffic from Clutch listings that also happen to point back to their website.

Resource page link building

Many Indian educational institutions, government sites, and industry associations maintain resource pages that link out to useful tools and guides. A free EMI calculator, a GST filing guide, or a glossary of legal terms can attract these links naturally if you promote them to the right people.

Email the webmaster of a relevant resource page, mention their page, and suggest your resource as something their audience would find useful. Keep the email short. This is a numbers game, but the conversion rate is decent if your resource is genuinely good.

What does not work

Buying links from Indian link farms is dangerous. Google has become good at detecting paid link networks, particularly in India where the same small cluster of sites appears repeatedly. A manual penalty can tank years of SEO work.

Comment spam, forum link dumps, and low-quality directory submissions are not worth the time. Google largely ignores these or treats them as negative signals.

Frequently asked questions

How many backlinks do I need to rank in India?

There is no fixed number. It depends on your niche and competitors. For local service keywords like "web designer in Ahmedabad," you might rank with 10 to 20 solid links. For competitive national terms, you could need hundreds. Analyse your top three competitors in Search Console to get a sense of the gap.

Should I use a backlink service that promises 100 links for Rs 5,000?

No. These services deliver low-quality or spammy links that can result in a Google penalty. Building 5 genuine links from real websites is worth more than 500 from link farms.

How long does link building take to show results in India?

Backlinks typically take one to three months to influence rankings after Google crawls and indexes them. Consistent link building over six to twelve months is what moves the needle meaningfully.
