Writing product descriptions that rank and convert for Indian e-commerce

Most Indian e-commerce product pages use manufacturer copy or thin descriptions. Here is how to write product content that actually ranks in Google and convinces buyers.

Writing product descriptions that rank and convert for Indian e-commerce

Product descriptions are where most Indian e-commerce stores leave both SEO rankings and conversions on the table simultaneously. The default approach is to copy the manufacturer description, add a few bullet points, and call it done. Google recognises this as thin or duplicate content, and buyers recognise it as generic and unhelpful.

Writing genuine product descriptions is more work upfront but pays back in organic rankings and conversion rates for years.

The duplicate content problem with manufacturer descriptions

Every competitor stocking the same product has access to the same manufacturer description. When dozens of websites publish identical text, Google cannot determine which one deserves to rank. The result is usually that none of them rank well for product keywords, or that a large marketplace like Flipkart or Amazon ranks for the keyword and takes the traffic instead.

Writing unique descriptions for every product on a large catalogue is not realistic for most businesses. Prioritise based on traffic potential and margin. Start with your top 20 to 30 products by revenue and write genuine descriptions for those. Use templated approaches for lower-priority products, but make sure the template is filled with specific product data, not generic filler text.

What a good product description covers

The best product descriptions answer the questions a buyer would ask before purchasing. What is it made of? How does it compare to alternatives? Who is it for and who is it not for? What problem does it solve? Are there any limitations or conditions to be aware of?

Indian buyers also respond to specific concerns around quality and authenticity. Adding a note about warranty, return policy, and authenticity in the description itself (not just the sidebar) reduces purchase hesitation.

For products where EMI is available, mentioning it in the description increases conversions. "Available on easy EMI from ₹600 per month" is worth including if your payment provider supports it.

Keyword research for product pages

Product description keywords are usually long-tail and specific. Instead of targeting "running shoes" (which you cannot compete for against Myntra and Flipkart), target "lightweight running shoes for flat feet India" or "cushioned running shoes under ₹3,000".

Use Google's autocomplete and People Also Ask feature to find questions your target buyer is asking. Answer those questions in your product description and FAQ section.

Do not force keywords awkwardly into descriptions. Write naturally for the buyer first. If you have covered the topic comprehensively, the relevant keywords will appear naturally in the text.

Structure for scannability on mobile

Most Indian shoppers browse products on mobile. Dense paragraph text is ignored. Structure your descriptions for scanning:

Start with a one or two sentence summary of what the product is and who it is for. Follow with three to five key features written as short sentences, not a generic bulleted list. Then add a more detailed paragraph for users who want depth. End with specifications in a simple table format.

The short summary at the top should contain your most important keyword naturally. Google often uses this text for the product snippet in search results.

Images and alt text

Every product image needs a descriptive alt tag. Not "product-image-1.jpg" but "red cotton kurta with embroidery for women size medium". This is basic SEO hygiene that most Indian e-commerce stores skip.

For SEO benefit, also consider adding an image showing the product in context or being used, not just the product in isolation. In-use images also improve conversion rates because they help buyers visualise the product.

Reviews as SEO content

Customer reviews add unique, keyword-rich content to your product pages automatically. A product with 40 reviews has significantly more content than the same product with no reviews, and much of it uses natural language that matches how buyers search.

Make leaving a review as easy as possible. A post-purchase WhatsApp message asking for a review is more effective than an email for Indian audiences. Offer a small discount on the next purchase as an incentive.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a product description be?

Length depends on product complexity. A simple consumable might need only 150 to 200 words. A technical product, a piece of furniture, or anything requiring size selection needs 400 to 600 words. Write as much as the buyer needs to make a confident decision, not more.

Should I use the same keyword in the title and description?

Yes, naturally. The product title is your H1 tag, which is the most important on-page SEO element. Include your primary keyword there, and use it two to three times naturally in the description. Do not repeat it mechanically.

Does adding FAQs to product pages help SEO?

Yes, particularly for products where buyers have common questions. A product FAQ section can rank for "does [product] work for [specific use case]" type queries, which are high-intent searches. It also reduces customer service queries.
