FAQ schema for Indian websites: implementation guide and what it actually does

FAQ schema markup helps Indian websites appear with expandable question-answer sections in Google results. Here is how to implement it correctly and what results to expect.

FAQ schema for Indian websites: implementation guide and what it actually does

FAQ schema is one of the most practical structured data implementations for Indian websites. When implemented correctly, it makes your search result expand to show a list of questions and answers directly in the Google results page. This takes up significantly more visual space in the results, pushing competitors down and increasing click-through rates even without a ranking improvement.

I have seen FAQ schema implementations increase click-through rates by 15 to 40 percent for pages where the expanded results appear. It is not complicated to implement and the payoff can be significant.

What FAQ schema actually does in search results

When Google validates and chooses to show your FAQ schema, your search result expands to show three or four question-answer pairs below your title and description. Each question is expandable. Users can see the answer without clicking through.

This sounds like zero-click behavior, but in practice FAQ schema often increases clicks. The questions create curiosity and signal that your page contains comprehensive information. Users who see relevant questions in the results are more likely to click than users who see only a generic description.

In India, Google shows FAQ rich results for a significant portion of eligible pages. The competition for FAQ schema display in Indian search results is lower than in Western markets, making the visibility gain more reliable.

Where to use FAQ schema on Indian websites

FAQ schema works best on pages that already contain question-and-answer content. Do not add fake FAQs just to trigger the schema. Google is increasingly good at identifying schema that does not match page content.

Service pages work well. An Indian law firm's corporate registration page with genuine FAQs about the process, costs, and timelines is ideal. A digital marketing agency's service page with FAQs about campaign performance expectations is appropriate.

Product pages with genuine customer questions are good candidates. If you have real customer queries about product usage, warranty, installation, or compatibility, these make strong FAQ schema candidates.

Blog posts that address a topic comprehensively and include a question-based FAQ section at the bottom are excellent candidates. Many Indian content marketers already structure posts this way for readability.

Implementation on WordPress

If you are using Yoast SEO or RankMath on WordPress, both plugins support FAQ schema through their FAQ blocks. In Gutenberg, add a Yoast or RankMath FAQ block, enter your questions and answers, and the plugin handles the schema markup automatically.

For technical implementation without a plugin, add JSON-LD markup to your page's head section. The structure looks like this conceptually: an FAQPage type containing MainEntity properties, each with a Question type containing acceptedAnswer text. Following Schema.org specifications precisely is important for validation.

Always validate your implementation using Google's Rich Results Test tool. It shows you whether Google can parse your schema and whether it is eligible for rich results.

Common FAQ schema mistakes on Indian websites

Duplicate questions across multiple pages confuse Google. If your FAQ schema on ten different pages all ask "What are your contact details?" with the same answer, that is signal dilution. Each page's FAQ should contain questions genuinely relevant to that specific page.

Questions that are too short or too generic do not perform well. "What is your price?" is worse than "What does a full website design project cost for an Indian small business?" The specific question matches real user queries better.

Answers that are very long (above 250 words) are truncated in search results and lose impact. Keep FAQ answers to 50 to 150 words. Comprehensive enough to be useful, concise enough to display effectively.

Frequently asked questions

Will FAQ schema guarantee a rich result appearance in Google?

No. Google chooses when to show rich results based on its own criteria. Even perfectly valid FAQ schema may not trigger expanded results for every search. On average, properly implemented FAQ schema shows expanded results for a significant proportion of eligible queries.

Can I use FAQ schema on every page of my website?

You can, but it is only appropriate where genuine FAQ content exists. Using FAQ schema on pages that do not contain question-answer content can result in a manual action from Google for structured data spam.

Does FAQ schema help with voice search in India?

Yes. Voice search queries often take the form of questions. FAQ schema signals to Google that your page answers specific questions, which increases the probability of your content being used for voice search responses.
