Google Ads strategy for the Indian festive season

CPC costs spike during the festive season as more advertisers compete for the same eyeballs. Here is how to structure your Google Ads campaigns to stay efficient while demand is high.

Google Ads strategy for the Indian festive season

Google Ads during the Indian festive season is not the same as Google Ads in July. Competition intensifies. CPCs climb. Budgets run out faster. The campaigns that perform well during October and November in India are not the ones with the highest budgets. They are the ones with the tightest structure and the most relevant messaging.

Why festive season Google Ads are different

Every advertiser increases their budget in October and November. This means the auction becomes more competitive. The same keywords that cost ₹15 per click in August might cost ₹40 in October. If you do not plan for this, your budget burns faster and your CPA balloons.

The other change is search intent. During the festive season, searches include modifiers like "Diwali offer," "festive discount," "best price," and "gift for." Your ad copy and landing pages need to reflect these modified intents to maintain relevance scores.

Structuring your festive campaigns

Create separate campaigns for your festive period rather than adjusting your evergreen campaigns. This separation gives you clear budget control (you can pause festive campaigns without affecting ongoing activity) and clean data for next year's planning.

Within your festive campaigns, split ad groups by intent level. Generic category searches ("wireless headphones") are lower intent. Specific festive searches ("wireless headphones Diwali sale") are higher intent. Specific branded searches ("Sony headphones Diwali offer") are the highest intent. Bid more aggressively on higher-intent terms.

Ad copy that converts during the festive season

Your ad headline must mention the offer specifically. "Up to 40% off this Diwali" outperforms "Premium quality products" during the festive season. Use countdown ad customisers to show the number of days remaining in the sale. Urgency works.

Include your USP in the description: free delivery, easy EMI, easy returns, or next-day delivery. For Indian consumers, delivery speed and return policy are significant purchase triggers.

Responsive Search Ads let Google test multiple headlines and descriptions automatically. For festive campaigns, load five to six headlines including festive-specific ones ("Diwali deals," "Celebrate with savings") and two to three evergreen ones in case your festive campaign runs beyond the festival period.

Bidding strategy adjustments for the festive season

If you typically use Target CPA or Target ROAS bidding, your algorithm has learned on non-festive data. During the festive season, customer behaviour changes. Consider loosening your target slightly (increase target CPA by 15 to 20 percent) to allow the algorithm more room to capture the higher-intent festive traffic rather than restricting spend.

Increase bid adjustments for mobile devices, especially for e-commerce. Festive shopping on mobile in India is dominant. Check your device performance data from previous years and allocate accordingly.

Remarketing during the festive season

Your shopping cart abandoners and recent site visitors are your highest-priority festive audience. Create specific remarketing lists for cart abandoners in the past 30 days, product page viewers in the past 14 days, and past purchasers for cross-sell campaigns.

Use RLSA (Remarketing Lists for Search Ads) to bid more aggressively when these warm audiences search for your category keywords. Someone who visited your jewellery page last week and is now searching "gold earrings Diwali offer" deserves a top-of-page bid.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I increase my Google Ads budget during the festive season?

A 30 to 50 percent increase over your standard monthly budget is a reasonable starting point for businesses in consumer categories. The right increase depends on your historical festive performance. If last year's Diwali campaigns generated three times your normal monthly revenue, a proportional budget increase makes sense.

Should I pause my non-festive campaigns during Diwali?

Only if your budget is limited. If you have enough budget to run both, keep evergreen campaigns running since some customers are not in a festive buying mindset and will convert on standard messaging. If budget is limited, temporarily shift spend to festive-specific campaigns and pause evergreen ones.

My ads stopped showing during peak Diwali hours last year because the budget ran out. How do I prevent this?

Set your campaign to "Standard" delivery (not "Accelerated") so Google distributes your budget throughout the day. Consider using shared budgets across campaigns. Most importantly, monitor budget utilisation daily during the festive week and increase budgets promptly if campaigns are hitting the daily limit before evening.
