Building a first-party data strategy for Indian businesses

As third-party tracking weakens, the businesses with rich first-party data will have a significant advantage. Here is how to start building yours systematically.

Building a first-party data strategy for Indian businesses

Every business has always collected data from its customers: names, phone numbers, what they bought, when they came back. What is new is the systematic approach to collecting, organising, and activating this data for marketing purposes. As platform tracking becomes less reliable, the value of your own customer data has never been higher.

First-party data is any information your customers share directly with you. An email address collected from a newsletter sign-up. A phone number captured through a WhatsApp opt-in. Purchase history from your e-commerce store. Quiz or preference survey responses. This data belongs to you. No platform change, cookie update, or algorithm shift can take it away.

The first-party data collection points Indian businesses already have

Most Indian businesses have more first-party data than they realise. The problem is it is scattered and not being used.

Your WhatsApp number is one of the richest data points you have. Every conversation is a first-party interaction. The issue is that these conversations are often in a single phone, not in a CRM, and the data disappears when someone leaves the company. Migrating to WhatsApp Business API and a proper CRM solves this.

Your email list, if you have one, is first-party data. Phone numbers collected through enquiry forms are first-party data. Customer purchase data in your WooCommerce or Shopify store is first-party data. Even the names and contact details in your accountant's Tally files are a form of first-party customer data.

Building a systematic collection strategy

The first step is deciding what data you actually need and what you will do with it. Collecting data for its own sake is not a strategy. Every data point you collect should have a specific use: segmenting email campaigns, building lookalike audiences in Meta Ads, qualifying leads before your sales team calls.

Email and phone number are the foundations. Build collection mechanisms at every touchpoint: website forms, checkout flows, in-store collection if you have a physical presence, WhatsApp opt-in campaigns.

For e-commerce, collect preference data at registration or after the first purchase. "What type of products are you interested in?" with a multi-select gives you segmentation data that improves personalisation of future communications.

Using first-party data in your ad platforms

Meta Ads and Google Ads allow you to upload your customer data as Custom Audiences. Meta matches the email addresses and phone numbers against its user database. Matched users can be targeted specifically or excluded from your prospecting campaigns (no point spending money advertising to existing customers who convert better through direct CRM).

More importantly, Custom Audiences from your customer data can be used to create Lookalike Audiences: Meta finds people who share characteristics with your existing customers. A Lookalike Audience built from 5,000 of your best customers is far more effective than broad demographic targeting.

In Google Ads, Customer Match works similarly. Upload your email list and target or exclude those users across Search, Shopping, YouTube, and Gmail.

Privacy-compliant data collection

Collecting data correctly means getting consent. For emails and phone numbers, a clear opt-in statement ("I agree to receive marketing communications via email and WhatsApp") should accompany every collection form. Store this consent record.

In India, while comprehensive data protection legislation is not yet fully in force, building privacy-compliant habits now prepares you for when it is and builds customer trust in the interim. A clear privacy policy that explains what you collect and how you use it is the minimum standard.

Frequently asked questions

How many contacts do I need before first-party data becomes useful for ad targeting?

Meta recommends a minimum of 1,000 matched users for reliable audience targeting with Custom Audiences. For Lookalike Audiences, a seed audience of 1,000 to 5,000 matched users produces better quality lookalikes. Start collecting now so you reach these thresholds faster.

How do I clean and maintain my first-party data over time?

Run your email list through a verification tool (like NeverBounce or ZeroBounce) every six months to remove invalid addresses. Update phone numbers when communication bounces. Segment inactive contacts and either re-engage them with a specific campaign or remove them to keep your database clean.

Is collecting phone numbers for WhatsApp marketing legal in India?

As of 2022, India's data protection law is not yet enacted in its final form, so specific WhatsApp marketing regulations are less defined than in Europe. Best practice is to collect explicit consent at the point of number collection, provide a clear opt-out mechanism, and honour opt-outs immediately. This is both ethical and preparation for future regulation.
