GA4 audiences for remarketing in India: building segments that convert

GA4 audiences are more powerful than Universal Analytics remarketing lists. Here is how to use them effectively for Indian campaigns.

GA4 audiences for remarketing in India: building segments that convert

Remarketing audiences built in Universal Analytics were simple: people who visited your website in the last 30 days. GA4 audiences are far more flexible. You can build segments based on specific events, sequences of events, time spent on certain pages, or predictive signals like purchase probability. Used well, these make remarketing campaigns dramatically more efficient.

The challenge is that GA4's audience builder has a learning curve, and many Indian marketing teams are still using basic "all visitors" remarketing lists from years ago. That is leaving significant money on the table.

The most useful GA4 audiences for Indian businesses

High-intent product viewers: users who viewed a specific product page or product category at least twice in a 14-day window. Viewing the same product multiple times signals genuine purchase consideration. This audience is dramatically more qualified than "visited the website."

Cart abandoners with payment page visit: segment users who reached the payment page but did not trigger your purchase event. In Indian e-commerce, cart abandonment is high partly due to UPI payment failures. This segment deserves a specific retargeting message ("Try a different payment method") rather than a generic "Complete your purchase" ad.

WhatsApp enquirers: if you have a custom event firing on WhatsApp button clicks (as discussed in the custom events post), build an audience of users who triggered that event but did not complete a purchase within 7 days. These are warm leads who engaged but did not close. Retarget with an ad that lowers the commitment threshold, perhaps a "Book a free consultation" or "Chat with us on WhatsApp" with a different angle.

High-value past purchasers: users who triggered a purchase event with a transaction value above a certain threshold. This audience is for upsell and cross-sell campaigns, not acquisition. Target them with premium products or complementary items to what they have already bought.

Predictive audiences in GA4

GA4 offers predictive audiences for properties with enough purchase data: "likely 7-day purchasers," "likely 7-day churners," and "predicted top spenders." These use Google's machine learning models trained on your own property's data.

To unlock predictive audiences, you need a minimum number of purchase events over a recent period (the exact number varies but is typically around 1,000 purchased users over 28 days). Not every Indian business will qualify, but e-commerce sites with meaningful traffic will.

"Likely 7-day purchasers" is particularly useful. It identifies users who have not yet purchased but whose behaviour pattern resembles those who did purchase. Bidding more aggressively on this audience in Google Ads can improve conversion efficiency significantly.

Linking GA4 audiences to Google Ads

In GA4 go to Admin > Google Ads Links and link your Google Ads account. Once linked, audiences you build in GA4 automatically appear in Google Ads under the Audience Manager, in the "Your data segments" section.

There is a 24 to 48 hour delay before a newly created audience appears in Google Ads, and another delay before it starts accumulating members. Plan this setup in advance of any campaign launch.

The minimum audience size for Search remarketing (RLSA) is 1,000 members. For Display and YouTube it is 100 members. For a smaller Indian business, building to minimum size takes time. Start with broader audiences like "all website visitors last 30 days" for immediate campaigns, and build more specific audiences in the background so they are ready when they hit minimum size.

Audience duration and membership windows

GA4 audience membership duration defaults to 30 days. This means a user who joined the audience 31 days ago is automatically removed. For most remarketing purposes this is appropriate, but for high-consideration purchases (real estate, courses, B2B software) where the sales cycle is longer, extend the duration to 60 or 90 days.

You can also set audience duration based on event conditions: keep a user in an audience for 7 days after they trigger a WhatsApp click event, or 14 days after a cart abandon. These time-bounded audiences are more precise than fixed-duration lists.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a GA4 audience to be usable in Google Ads remarketing?

After linking GA4 and Google Ads, new audiences appear in Google Ads within 24 to 48 hours. The audience then needs to accumulate enough members to be eligible: 1,000 for Search, 100 for Display. For a new or small site, this can take days to weeks depending on traffic volume.

Can I use GA4 audiences in Meta Ads as well as Google Ads?

Not directly. GA4 audiences export only to Google Ads and Google Analytics 4 itself (for cross-property analysis). For Meta Ads remarketing, you need to use the Meta Pixel or Conversions API to build custom audiences within Meta Ads Manager. The segment logic will be similar but built independently.

What is RLSA and how does it work with GA4 audiences?

RLSA stands for Remarketing Lists for Search Ads. It lets you modify your Google Search Ad bids or ads for users who are in a specific remarketing audience. For example, you can bid 50% higher on Google Search when someone in your "cart abandoners" audience searches for your product name. This targets users who have already shown intent and are doing further research.

Should I exclude past purchasers from all campaigns?

Not necessarily. Exclude them from acquisition campaigns targeting new customers. But include them in retargeting campaigns focused on repeat purchase, upsell, or cross-sell. Create a "30-day recent purchasers" audience to exclude from acquisition campaigns, and build separate campaigns targeting your buyer base with new products or seasonal offers.
