How to improve your Google Ads Quality Score in India

A low Quality Score quietly drains your budget every day. Here is how Indian advertisers can push it up and pay less per click.

How to improve your Google Ads Quality Score in India

Quality Score is one of those metrics that looks harmless in the Google Ads dashboard but controls a surprising amount of what you pay. A score of 3 means you are paying two or three times more per click than a competitor with a score of 8 for the exact same keyword. I have watched Indian businesses burn through ₹40,000 a month on ads where the average Quality Score was sitting at 4 across the board.

The good news is that Quality Score is fixable. It takes a few weeks of consistent work, but the ROI is real.

What Quality Score actually measures

Google calculates Quality Score from three components: expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience. Each gets rated as below average, average, or above average. The final score runs from 1 to 10.

Expected CTR compares how often people click your ad versus how often your competitors' ads get clicked for the same keyword. Ad relevance checks whether your ad copy closely matches what the keyword is about. Landing page experience looks at whether your page delivers on what the ad promised, loads fast, and is easy to use on mobile.

Most Indian advertisers have problems in all three areas at once.

Fix your keyword and ad group structure first

The most common issue I see is broad ad groups stuffed with 30 to 50 keywords covering completely different topics. One ad group for a Delhi-based coaching centre was trying to serve the same ads for "IIT JEE coaching Delhi", "NEET classes near me", and "MBA preparation institute". Those are different searches with different intent and different audiences.

Break your campaigns into tightly themed ad groups. One ad group should cover one topic. If you have 50 keywords, you probably need 10 to 15 ad groups. Use the Single Keyword Ad Group approach for your highest-spend keywords where you want maximum control.

For Indian service businesses, localising your ad groups by city also helps. "CA firm Mumbai" and "CA firm Pune" should usually be separate ad groups so the ad copy can mention the city directly.

Write ads that match the keyword exactly

Ad relevance improves when the keyword appears naturally in your headline. If someone searches "website design company Bangalore" and your headline reads "Professional Web Solutions India", that is a relevance mismatch.

Use Dynamic Keyword Insertion sparingly, but do use it for your top keyword clusters. For Responsive Search Ads, write at least 8 to 10 headlines so Google has options to combine. Include the keyword in at least three of your headlines. Write at least three description lines that speak directly to the offer.

One thing that works well in the Indian market is mentioning a specific price or starting cost in the ad. "Website design from ₹12,000" outperforms vague claims like "affordable web design" in most niches because it pre-qualifies clicks.

Improve landing page speed and relevance

Landing page experience is where most Indian websites lose points. A page that takes 8 seconds to load on a 4G connection gets rated poorly regardless of how good the content is. Use Google PageSpeed Insights to check your scores. Aim for above 70 on mobile.

Beyond speed, the page has to match the ad. If your ad promotes "Google Ads management services", the landing page should lead with that exact service, not a generic "digital marketing agency" homepage.

Add a clear headline that mirrors your ad, a short paragraph explaining what you do, a visible phone number or WhatsApp link, and a simple form. Pages that ask for name, phone, and requirement convert better than five-field forms asking for company size and annual revenue.

Track and iterate every two weeks

Quality Score does not update instantly. After making changes, give it two weeks before evaluating. Check the three sub-components under the Columns menu in your keywords view. If landing page experience is still below average after fixing speed and content, the issue might be high bounce rate, which means the page content is not meeting user expectations.

Pause keywords with Quality Score of 2 or below that have spent more than ₹500 without a conversion. Either rewrite the ad group around them properly or remove them.

Frequently asked questions

Does Quality Score directly affect my ad position?

Not directly, but it affects your Ad Rank, which determines where your ad appears. Ad Rank is Quality Score multiplied by your bid. A higher Quality Score means you can rank above competitors while bidding less.

How long does it take to see Quality Score improve?

In my experience, two to four weeks of consistent changes. Some scores update faster. The landing page experience component tends to update within a week if you make significant page changes.

Can I improve Quality Score without changing my bids?

Yes. Quality Score is independent of your bid amount. Improving CTR, ad relevance, and landing page experience will raise your score without touching bids. In fact, the whole point is that a better score lets you pay less for the same position.
