Google My Business setup and optimisation for Indian businesses

A properly set-up Google My Business profile is the single highest-ROI free marketing tool available to Indian local businesses. Here is how to do it right.

Google My Business setup and optimisation for Indian businesses

When someone in your city searches for what you offer, Google My Business is often the first thing they see. Before your website. Before any paid ad. That map pack with three business listings and photos and star ratings. Showing up there can bring in calls and walk-in customers for zero ongoing cost. Yet a surprising number of Indian businesses have either not claimed their listing or left it in an incomplete, unoptimised state.

Claiming and verifying your listing

Go to business.google.com and search for your business name. If a listing already exists but is unclaimed, you will see an option to claim it. If no listing exists, create one. Google will usually verify you by sending a postcard with a PIN code to your business address. This takes 5 to 14 days in India. Some businesses are eligible for phone or email verification, but postcard is the most common method.

Make sure your business name in the listing matches your actual business name exactly. Do not stuff keywords into the name field. "Sharma Accounting Services" is fine. "Sharma Accounting Services Best CA Pune GST Filing" will get your listing flagged or suspended.

Filling out every section completely

Google rewards completeness. A fully filled-out profile consistently outperforms a sparse one in local rankings. Cover all of this:

Business category. This is arguably the most important field. Choose the primary category carefully because it strongly influences what searches you appear for. You can add secondary categories too. A law firm might choose "Law firm" as primary and "Legal services" as secondary.

Business description. You get 750 characters. Use them to describe what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different. Mention your city and neighbourhood naturally. Do not just list services. Write like a human being.

Business hours. Keep these accurate. If your hours change for festivals or holidays, update them. Nothing damages trust faster than showing up to a business during listed hours and finding it closed.

Products and services. Many businesses skip these tabs. Add your key services with descriptions and prices where applicable. This content shows up directly in your listing.

Photos. Businesses with photos get significantly more direction requests and website clicks than those without. Upload your exterior, interior, team photos, and product or work samples. Aim for at least 10 high-quality photos to start.

Getting and responding to reviews

Reviews are both a ranking signal and a conversion tool. A business with 40 reviews averaging 4.6 stars will consistently outrank and out-convert a competitor with 5 reviews at 4.8.

The most effective way to get reviews is to simply ask. After a positive interaction, say: "If you found us helpful, a quick Google review would mean a lot to us." Share your direct review link via WhatsApp. You can find your review link in your Google My Business dashboard under "Get more reviews."

Respond to every review, positive or negative. Thank positive reviewers by name if possible. For negative reviews, stay professional, acknowledge the concern, and offer to resolve it offline. Arguing with reviewers publicly never ends well.

Using posts to stay active

Google My Business has a posts feature that most Indian businesses completely ignore. You can publish updates, offers, and event announcements directly to your listing. These appear when someone finds your listing on Google. Posts expire after seven days for regular updates, so adding one post per week keeps your listing looking active and current.

During festive seasons like Navratri, Dussehra, or Diwali, posting a special offer directly on your GMB listing can drive walk-in traffic with zero ad spend.

Answering questions in the Q and A section

The Q and A section on Google My Business allows anyone to ask questions about your business publicly. You can and should pre-populate this section yourself with common questions your customers ask. "Do you offer home delivery?" "What is your minimum order?" "Do you accept UPI?" Answer these before customers have to ask them. This also slightly helps with ranking for long-tail queries.

Check this section regularly because anyone can answer questions on your behalf, including people who may give incorrect information.

Frequently asked questions

My business does not have a physical address. Can I still use Google My Business?

Yes. Service-area businesses, like home tutors, event decorators, or plumbers who visit clients, can set a service area instead of listing a physical address. You can hide your address and just show the areas you serve.

How long does it take to rank in the local map pack?

It varies. A new listing in a low-competition category in a Tier 2 city might appear within a few weeks. A competitive category in a major metro can take 3 to 6 months of consistent effort. Having a complete profile, regular posts, and growing reviews all help.

Does Google My Business work for businesses that only operate online?

It is designed for businesses with physical locations or defined service areas. If you are purely online with no geographic focus, Google My Business is less relevant for you.
