Google Shopping India: a beginner's guide for small retailers

Google Shopping ads let your products appear directly in search results with images and prices. Here is how small Indian retailers can get started without wasting their budget.

Google Shopping India: a beginner's guide for small retailers

Google Shopping lets your products appear as visual ads at the top of search results, complete with product image, price, and store name. For small Indian retailers selling physical products, this is one of the most effective ways to reach buyers who already know what they want. The challenge is that the setup is more involved than a standard text ad campaign.

This guide walks through the basics in plain terms. I am assuming you have a product-based website, which could be a WooCommerce store, a Shopify India store, or a custom-built e-commerce site.

Start with Google Merchant Center

Google Shopping runs through Merchant Center, not directly through Google Ads. Your first step is to create a Merchant Center account at merchants.google.com. You will need to verify your website by adding a snippet to your site's header or uploading a verification file.

During setup, you will need to provide your business information including your registered Indian address, the currency (Indian Rupee), and your shipping and return policy. Google is strict about these policies being accurate and easily findable on your website. Missing or vague shipping information is one of the most common reasons Indian retailers get disapproved.

Set up your product feed

A product feed is a structured file that tells Google about your products, including title, description, price, availability, image URL, and product category. This is the heart of Google Shopping.

For WooCommerce users, the "WooCommerce Google Feed Manager" or "ELEX WooCommerce Google Shopping Plugin" can generate this feed automatically. For Shopify, there is a native Google channel integration. For custom stores, you may need to generate a Google Sheets or XML feed manually or with developer help.

Product titles in your feed matter enormously. Include the key search terms buyers use. "Cotton kurta for women" is weaker than "Women's pure cotton floral kurta, M-XXL, washable." The specificity improves both ranking in Shopping results and the quality of traffic you receive.

Link Merchant Center to Google Ads

Once your feed is approved, create a Google Ads account if you do not already have one, and link it to your Merchant Center from within the Merchant Center settings. Then create a Shopping campaign in Google Ads, selecting the linked Merchant Center account and the country of sale (India).

For beginners, I recommend starting with Standard Shopping rather than Smart Shopping or Performance Max. Standard Shopping gives you more control over which products appear and lets you set bids by product group. You can see exactly what search terms triggered your ads and exclude irrelevant ones.

Bidding and budget for Indian small retailers

Start conservatively. A daily budget of ₹300 to ₹500 is workable for a small product range. Set a target ROAS only once you have at least 30 conversions tracked. Before that, use manual CPC or a modest Maximize Clicks strategy.

Watch your search term report closely. Google Shopping can match your products to surprisingly broad or irrelevant searches. Add negative keywords aggressively. An Indian retailer selling traditional Indian jewellery should be adding negatives like "artificial," "costume," or brands they do not carry.

Product images are the first thing buyers see in Shopping ads. Invest in clean, well-lit product photography against a white background. Poor images result in poor click-through rates regardless of how competitive your price is.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run Google Shopping if I also sell on Amazon or Flipkart?

Yes. Your own website and marketplace listings operate independently. Google Shopping drives traffic to your website, which gives you better margins than marketplace sales.

Why are my products getting disapproved in Merchant Center?

The most common reasons are price mismatches between your feed and website, missing or unclear return policies, image quality issues, or missing GTINs for branded products. Fix these one by one and resubmit.

How long before I see sales from Google Shopping?

With a well-structured feed and budget, you can see initial transactions within the first week. But optimising for profitability typically takes four to six weeks of search term refinement and bid adjustments.
