Instagram Reels strategy for Indian brands

Reels are Instagram's fastest-growing format and one of the few organic ways to reach new Indian audiences without paying for ads. Here is how to build a Reels strategy that works.

Instagram Reels strategy for Indian brands

Organic reach on Instagram has been declining for years. Feed posts reach maybe 3 to 5 percent of your followers. Stories disappear after 24 hours. But Reels are different. A well-made Reel from an account with 500 followers can reach 50,000 people if Instagram's algorithm decides it is worth distributing. For Indian brands, this makes Reels one of the most valuable organic content formats available right now.

Why Reels work differently from other Instagram content

Instagram's algorithm distributes Reels to non-followers through the Explore page and the Reels feed. That means a Reel is the only Instagram content format with genuine discovery potential. Feed posts and Stories only reach people who already follow you (and not even all of them).

The trade-off is that Reels needs to earn that distribution. The algorithm looks for Reels that get watched more than once, shared via DM, saved, and commented on. Creating Reels that prompt those actions is the strategy.

What Reels to make for Indian audiences

The Reels formats that consistently perform for Indian brand accounts are: educational tips (quick, specific, and actionable: "3 things to do before listing on Amazon India"), behind-the-scenes content (showing how a product is made, how an order is packed, or how a team meeting looks), and entertaining content that ties into Indian cultural moments (festivals, cricket, seasonal events).

The common thread is that they feel native to the platform. A repurposed 2-minute TV advertisement cut to 30 seconds almost never performs. Something filmed casually on a phone, edited with simple cuts and captions, that delivers one clear insight, performs far better.

For Indian brands specifically: use regional language text overlays alongside English if your audience speaks Hindi, Tamil, or another language at home. Adding Hindi captions to an English-language Reel can meaningfully increase reach with tier-2 and tier-3 city audiences.

The first three seconds

This is what determines whether your Reel gets watched. Open with something that immediately signals value or curiosity. A question that your audience is already asking. A counter-intuitive statement. A visual that creates curiosity.

"Most Indian businesses are doing this wrong on Instagram..." is more compelling than "Today I want to talk about Instagram strategy." The first three seconds need to make the viewer think "I need to see what comes next."

Audio and music

Reels with trending audio get a small algorithmic push. Instagram makes it easy to use trending sounds. When creating a Reel, tap on an audio clip that shows an arrow (indicating it is trending) and use it in your content. Make sure the audio is appropriate for the content, not just added for the sake of it.

Original audio (your own voiceover or dialogue) can also build recognition over time. Several Indian brand accounts have built followings partly through a consistent voice or speaking style that people recognise.

Frequency and consistency

Post at least two to three Reels per week when you are building a following. Inconsistency kills momentum. Instagram tends to reward accounts that post frequently with more consistent distribution.

Batch-create content. Spend half a day filming five to eight Reels, then schedule them across two weeks using Instagram's built-in scheduling or a tool like Buffer or Later. This is far more sustainable than filming one at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Do Reels need to be long to perform?

No. Reels between 7 and 30 seconds tend to have the highest completion rates, which drives distribution. Longer Reels (up to 90 seconds) can work if the content genuinely holds attention throughout. Most educational tip-style Reels perform well at 15 to 30 seconds.

Should I add captions to my Reels?

Yes, always. A large portion of Indian Instagram viewers watch with sound off, especially in public spaces. Captions ensure your message gets through regardless. Most editing tools and Instagram itself now offer automatic captions.

How do I know which Reels are working?

Check Instagram Insights for each Reel. Look at reach (how many non-followers saw it), accounts reached vs followers percentage, and watch time metrics. Reels with high non-follower reach are being distributed by the algorithm and are templates worth repeating.
