Meta Ads vs Google Ads for Indian businesses: which one works for your industry

Both platforms work. They work for different things. Picking the wrong one for your business type and stage is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make with a limited budget.

Meta Ads vs Google Ads for Indian businesses: which one works for your industry

The Meta vs. Google question comes up in almost every initial conversation with a new client. The honest answer is that they're not competing for the same job.

Google Search Ads capture demand that already exists. Meta Ads create demand that doesn't exist yet. Choosing between them depends on whether your customers are already searching for what you offer.

When Google Ads works better

High intent, specific search. If someone types "best CA near Connaught Place Delhi" or "Rajasthan honeymoon package November 2026," they've already decided they want the thing. They're evaluating providers. Google puts your ad in front of that person at exactly the right moment.

Service businesses benefit most from this: legal, education, travel, home services, healthcare, B2B. People search for these when they have a specific need.

Shorter consideration cycles. Pest control, plumber, appliance repair — these have immediate need and fast decisions. Google is almost always the right channel.

Limited brand recognition. If potential customers don't know your brand exists, they can't search for you on Meta. Google captures them through their intent, not their awareness of you.

When Meta Ads works better

Visual or aspirational products. Jewellery, fashion, home decor, travel inspiration, fitness products — people browse Meta without intent to buy, see something that appeals to them, and convert. D2C brands in India often find Meta ROAS of 4:1 to 8:1 in these categories.

Building brand awareness. If you're a new business in a category where you need people to know you exist before they think to search for you, Meta's targeting by interest, demographics, and behavior can build that awareness cheaply.

Retargeting. Showing ads to people who visited your website is more efficient on Meta because the creative format (image, video, carousel) explains your product better than a text link. Meta retargeting campaigns are almost always worth running once you have a pixel installed.

Large audiences with longer consideration. Insurance, financial products, courses — people don't search for these daily but can be reached through Meta's interest and lookalike targeting.

The India-specific context

A few factors that shift the calculation in the Indian market:

WhatsApp. India's 500M+ WhatsApp users make Meta's Click-to-WhatsApp ad format particularly effective for service businesses. The conversion path is shorter and more familiar than a form submit. If your leads prefer WhatsApp contact, this is worth testing.

Mobile-first audience. Both platforms are predominantly mobile in India. But Meta's visual formats — Stories, Reels, carousel — are more native to how Indian mobile users interact with content than text-based search ads.

Cost. Indian CPMs on Meta are among the lowest globally (₹50-200 for broad audiences, ₹200-800 for more targeted). This makes brand awareness campaigns more affordable than in Western markets. Google CPCs for competitive categories like education or finance can be high (₹100-250+).

The false choice

Most businesses eventually need both. The realistic sequence for a service business starting from scratch:

  1. Start with Google Search (captures existing intent, faster results)
  2. Add Meta retargeting once you have site traffic to retarget (low cost, maintains brand presence)
  3. Add Meta prospecting once Google is profitable and you have creative assets that work (scales audience beyond search volume)

The mistake is splitting a limited budget between both from day one and getting mediocre results from both because neither has enough spend to optimize.

Frequently asked questions

My competitor is on both Google and Meta. Should I be too?

Being in both channels doesn't mean both channels are profitable for them. Work out what's right for your business based on your product type and customer search behavior, not what your competitor does.

Can I run Meta Ads without a Facebook page?

No. Meta Ads require a Facebook Page and ideally a connected Instagram account. Setting these up before you start is part of the foundation.

What's the minimum budget to test each platform in India?

For Google Search, ₹15,000-20,000/month gives you enough clicks to learn something. For Meta, ₹10,000-15,000/month for a focused campaign is a reasonable test. Below these thresholds you're not running enough volume to draw reliable conclusions.
