Offline to online tracking in India: closing the attribution gap for physical businesses

When your customer walks in after seeing your ad, most businesses have no idea which ad sent them. Here is how to fix that.

Offline to online tracking in India: closing the attribution gap for physical businesses

A saree store in Surat runs Google Ads and Meta campaigns. Customers walk in, buy, and the owner has no idea which ad they saw, or if they saw any ad at all. The ad platforms claim credit for conversions based on viewthroughs and clickthroughs, but without an actual offline measurement method, those claims are guesses at best.

This problem affects most Indian retail businesses. The solution is not one tool. It is a combination of methods, each capturing a different part of the offline-to-online journey.

Ask the question, train the staff

The simplest method is also the most underused. Ask every customer who sent them. Train front desk, sales, and billing staff to ask one question at checkout or during the conversation: "How did you hear about us?" Record the answer. Even handwritten in a notebook is better than nothing.

Yes, customers often say "I searched online" without remembering the exact channel. But even that data is useful. You will learn whether offline word of mouth is dominant, whether your area hoardings are registering, or whether Instagram is actually driving feet through the door. Tabulate responses weekly and look for patterns.

For service businesses with appointment booking, add this question to the booking form itself.

UTM-tagged QR codes for offline materials

Every printed material you produce, hoardings, brochures, visiting cards, packaging, restaurant table tents, should have a unique QR code that links to a UTM-tagged URL. This creates a measurable digital touchpoint even for offline customers.

A hoarding in Bandra that drives someone to scan the QR code and visit your website gives you a data point: that person saw the Bandra hoarding. If they then convert, that conversion is partially attributable to the hoarding.

Set up separate UTM sources for each offline channel: utm_source=hoarding-bandra, utm_source=flyer-koramangala, utm_source=event-delhi. You will see these in GA4 under Traffic Acquisition.

Google Ads store visit conversions

If you run a physical store with meaningful foot traffic, Google Ads offers store visit conversions. These use anonymised, aggregated location data from users who have location history enabled on their Google accounts. When a user who clicked your ad visits your store within a defined window, Google counts a store visit.

To be eligible, your business needs a Google Business Profile, sufficient traffic volume (typically several hundred visits per month), and your store locations added to your Google Ads account.

This does not attribute individual sales to ads, but it tells you whether ad campaigns are driving physical foot traffic. Run it for 30 days during an active campaign period and compare the store visit rate to your non-campaign baseline.

WhatsApp as a bridge channel

This is specific to India and often overlooked. Many Indian customers who see an ad will WhatsApp the business to ask questions before visiting. If you track which customers WhatsApped before purchasing, and you can see what channel drove their first message (look at the UTM source in whatever link they clicked to start the WhatsApp conversation), you have an offline-to-WhatsApp-to-purchase attribution chain.

Use a WhatsApp Business API provider that shows you how each conversation started. If they clicked a "Chat on WhatsApp" button from a Google Ads landing page, that click carries your UTM parameters. If they messaged from your Instagram profile, that is a Meta attribution. The conversation log plus the entry source is a powerful dataset.

Promo codes per campaign

For Indian businesses running promotions, unique promo codes per channel are a reliable offline attribution method. The Diwali campaign on Meta gets code DIWALI20META, the Google campaign gets DIWALI20GOOGLE, and the email list gets DIWALI20EMAIL. When the code is used at checkout, online or offline, you know exactly which campaign drove that purchase.

The limitation is that customers sometimes share codes or forget to use them. But in aggregate, the pattern is reliable. If 300 people use the Meta code and 80 use the Google code, Meta drove roughly 3.75x more conversions for that campaign, regardless of what the ad platforms themselves report.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Google Analytics 4 to track offline conversions from digital ads?

Yes, through two methods. First, import offline conversion data using GA4's Measurement Protocol if you have a CRM that records which lead source led to an offline sale. Second, use UTM-tagged QR codes on offline materials to create measurable digital touchpoints.

How do I link a walk-in customer to the Google Ad they saw?

Google Ads store visit conversions use Google's location data to do this anonymously at scale. For individual-level tracking, a phone number at checkout matched against your Meta or Google customer lists is the most practical method in India.

What is the best way to measure hoarding or outdoor advertising effectiveness in India?

Unique QR codes on each hoarding that link to UTM-tagged pages, combined with a "how did you hear about us" question at checkout, and a survey or phone number capture at the hoarding location if possible. No single method is perfect but the combination gives you a useful signal.

Does asking customers how they found you actually give reliable data?

It is imperfect but underrated. Customers often remember the channel type (Instagram, Google, word of mouth) even if not the specific ad. The data improves the more consistently you collect it. For high-value purchases where the sales conversation is longer, customers are quite accurate about what drew them in.
