Product listing optimisation for Indian marketplaces
Your product listing is your salesperson on Amazon and Flipkart. Here is how to optimise titles, bullets, images, and A+ content for Indian buyers.

On a marketplace like Amazon.in or Flipkart, your product listing is the entire sales experience. There is no salesperson, no store ambience, no opportunity to handle the product before buying. The listing has to do everything: attract the right buyer, build confidence, answer objections, and convert. Getting this right is the foundation of marketplace success.
Bad listings waste advertising spend. Great listings convert both organic and paid traffic efficiently.
The product title is your most valuable real estate
Marketplace titles are long for a reason. The algorithm uses your title to match your product to search queries. The buyer uses it to quickly assess whether the product is what they are looking for.
A well-structured title for Amazon India typically follows this pattern: Brand + Product Type + Key Feature + Specification + Pack Size (if relevant). For example: "Bombay Dyeing 100% Cotton Double Bedsheet with 2 Pillow Covers, 220 TC, Blue Floral Print."
Include the most important search terms in your title, but write it for a human to read, not just for keyword density. Titles that are just a string of keywords perform poorly because click-through rates are low when buyers cannot quickly understand what the product is.
Bullet points that address real buyer concerns
Most sellers use bullet points to list product specifications. Buyers use them to answer questions. There is a difference. "Made of pure cotton" is a specification. "Machine washable and colour-fast even after 50 washes, verified by our in-house quality team" answers a real concern Indian buyers have about fabric durability.
Think about the top five questions a buyer would ask before purchasing your product. Each bullet point should answer one of those questions. For a pressure cooker, the concerns might be: Is it compatible with induction stoves? Is it ISI certified? What sizes are available? Is the warranty honoured in India? Does it come with a spare gasket?
Write in the second person. "You get," "Your food stays," "This helps you" are more engaging than third-person specification lists.
Images that convert Indian buyers
Marketplace products with seven or more high-quality images consistently outperform those with fewer. Amazon allows up to nine images; use all of them.
The main image must be on a white background with the product occupying at least 85 percent of the frame. This is an Amazon requirement, not just best practice.
Secondary images can and should include lifestyle photos. An Indian kitchen appliance photographed in a real Indian kitchen setting, with recognisable Indian ingredients or utensils nearby, connects better with Indian buyers than a sterile studio photo. A saree photographed on a model in a traditional setting helps buyers visualise how it will look when worn.
Include an infographic that calls out key features visually. A supplement bottle with arrows pointing to "No artificial colours," "Lab tested," and "100 capsules" communicates quickly what a paragraph of text cannot.
A+ content and its impact
A+ content (available to brand-registered sellers on Amazon) allows enhanced product descriptions with images, comparison tables, and formatted text below the standard description. A+ content has been shown to increase conversion rates by 3 to 10 percent on average.
For Indian sellers, use A+ content to tell the brand story. Where is the product made? What makes your manufacturing process or materials different? Indian buyers respond positively to "Made in India" stories and to founders who explain their craft or quality commitment personally.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I update my product listings?
Review your listings quarterly. Check which search terms are driving traffic and conversions in your advertising reports and ensure those terms are represented in your title and bullets. Update images seasonally where relevant.
Does listing quality directly affect marketplace search ranking?
Yes. Both Amazon and Flipkart's algorithms consider listing completeness, sales velocity, review count, and click-through rate when determining organic ranking. A well-optimised listing with strong imagery tends to get higher organic placement.
How many reviews do I need before my listing converts well?
In India, products with at least 15 to 20 genuine reviews convert significantly better than those with fewer. Getting your first 20 reviews through follow-up emails and post-purchase WhatsApp messages should be an early priority for new listings.
