UPI and digital payments: the impact on Indian e-commerce marketing

UPI has transformed how Indians pay online. For e-commerce marketers, this shift changes everything from checkout conversion to ad messaging to customer trust signals.

UPI and digital payments: the impact on Indian e-commerce marketing

UPI crossed 8 billion transactions in a single month in late 2022. That number tells you something fundamental has changed about how Indians buy things online. For e-commerce marketers, this is not just a payment method change. It is a shift in what customers expect, what converts them, and how they talk about trust.

What UPI has done to checkout conversion

Before UPI, the checkout drop-off rate for Indian e-commerce was brutal. Credit card penetration was low. Net banking was clunky. COD (cash on delivery) was popular but created fulfilment problems. UPI changed the conversion math significantly.

Customers with a UPI app (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM) can complete a payment in under 30 seconds. There is no card number to type, no OTP to wait for via SMS (though some UPI flows do require PIN entry), and no bank website to navigate. For mobile-first Indian shoppers, this removes a major friction point.

If your e-commerce website does not prominently support UPI, you are losing customers. This should be the first payment method shown at checkout, not buried under credit card and net banking options.

Messaging and trust signals in ads

"Pay via UPI" has become a conversion signal in Indian ad copy. Ads that mention UPI payment availability see better click-through rates, particularly on Meta and Google for mobile audiences. This is because UPI is associated with simplicity and security in the Indian consumer's mind.

Prominently displaying UPI logos (PhonePe, GPay, Paytm) on your product pages and checkout page signals that payment will be easy. This is the equivalent of displaying Visa/Mastercard logos for an international audience. Indian customers look for these signals before committing to buy.

For ad creative targeting audiences outside the top 6 metro cities, UPI messaging is even more important. Tier-2 and tier-3 city customers are often more comfortable with UPI than with cards.

COD versus prepaid: the conversion rate trade-off

Despite UPI's growth, COD still accounts for a significant portion of e-commerce orders in India, particularly for first-time buyers and categories like fashion where returns are common. The challenge is that COD has a higher return and non-delivery rate.

The smart approach is to use UPI incentives to shift COD customers to prepaid. Offer a small discount (₹30 to ₹100) or free shipping for prepaid UPI orders. This is visible in the marketing messaging: "Pay via UPI and save ₹50." Platforms like Swiggy and Flipkart have used this approach effectively.

Track your COD-to-prepaid ratio. A high COD percentage is not just a logistics cost problem; it is a signal that customers do not yet trust your brand enough to pay upfront. Addressing trust through reviews, return policies, and brand recognition is ultimately what shifts this ratio.

UPI-based marketing opportunities

UPI is not just a payment method; it is a marketing channel. QR codes for UPI payments can be used in offline contexts (flyers, events, stores) that drive online transactions. Scan-to-pay experiences blend offline discovery with online fulfilment.

UPI Autopay (recurring payments) is useful for subscription businesses. A customer can set up an autopay mandate for ₹999 per month for a subscription box, eliminating monthly friction. Marketing this as "easy recurring UPI payments" is more compelling to Indian audiences than "credit card recurring billing."

PhonePe and Google Pay also run offers and cashback campaigns that brands can participate in. If you are running a promotional campaign, coordinate with your payment gateway to see if any active UPI cashback offers can be piggy-backed on your campaign.

Frequently asked questions

Should I show UPI as the first payment option at checkout?

Yes, for most Indian e-commerce sites targeting mass-market audiences. UPI has the widest adoption and lowest friction. Show it first, make the logos prominent, and ensure the payment flow is smooth on mobile.

How do I set up UPI payments on my website?

You need a payment gateway that supports UPI. Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, and Instamojo all support UPI. Integration with a WordPress WooCommerce site typically involves installing the payment gateway's plugin and entering your credentials. Most setups take under an hour.

Can I use UPI payment data for retargeting campaigns?

Not directly. You cannot pass UPI payment data to Meta or Google for retargeting. However, you can use order confirmation events (post-payment) to build custom audiences of buyers. Focus on tracking the purchase event on your website with the Meta Pixel or Google Tag, which fires after successful payment regardless of payment method.
