What building a product (WXD Backup Lite) taught me about building for clients

We built WXD Backup Lite because we were tired of getting emergency calls at 11 PM when a client's WordPress site broke and they had no recent backup. It was not a startup vision. It was a fix for a problem we dealt with every quarter. A lightweight backup plugin, automatic daily snapshots, stored off-site, email alerts if the job failed. Simple.

We built it for ourselves and our managed hosting clients. We did not launch it publicly. But building it changed how I think about almost everything we do for clients now.

The part nobody warns you about

When you build for a client, you get a budget, a deadline, a scope document, and a relationship with someone who is paying you. There are constraints, but they are structured constraints. Someone tells you what done looks like.

When you build your own product, you discover that the hardest part is not the building. It is deciding what to build. We spent three weeks arguing internally about whether the backup schedules should be configurable per-site or standardized. We spent another two weeks on the restore flow. A client would have told us. We had to figure it out ourselves, and figuring it out required us to imagine users we did not fully know yet.

That process, imagining the user, building something specific enough to be useful but general enough to work for more than one person, is exactly what clients hire us to do. I had always understood that intellectually. Building our own product made me feel it. The difference between intellectually understanding user empathy and actually sweating over it at midnight is significant.

What transferred back to client work

I became much more insistent, after that, on asking clients to describe their actual users in specific terms. Not "small business owners." Not "working professionals." I want to know about the person who calls them on a Tuesday afternoon with a complaint. I want to know what questions the sales team answers on repeat. I want to know what the customer who renewed after three years said when asked why.

Specificity is not a luxury in product thinking. It is the only way you build something that works. WXD Backup Lite worked because we knew exactly who was going to use it and what problem they were having at 11 PM. The best client projects we have run have that same quality.
