What it means to be a "full-stack" agency in 2024

What it means to be a "full-stack" agency in 2024

Every agency with a website claims to be full-stack now. The term has been stretched far enough that it has lost most of its meaning. We use it to describe ourselves and we have thought carefully about what we actually mean by it, because if we cannot define it precisely, we should not be using it.

For us, full-stack means that the people doing your campaigns understand how your website works, and the people building your website understand the campaigns that send traffic to it. These are not always the same person but they need to be in genuine conversation, not in separate workstreams that converge at a client update call once a month.

Where the integration matters

The most common failure mode we see in clients who come from agencies that split these functions is a landing page that was built by the web team without any input from the campaign team. The campaign team then sends traffic to a page that does not match the ad's message, has a form that is three steps longer than necessary, and loads in four seconds on a mobile connection. The split creates an accountability gap. Each team can point to their own metrics looking acceptable while the combined result is poor.

When you have one team, or one agency, holding both, the conversation changes. The campaign structure informs the landing page design from the beginning. The technical performance of the site is a campaign concern, not a separate infrastructure concern. Attribution connects because the people building the tracking understand the campaigns it is tracking.

What it requires to sustain

Running both functions well requires breadth without sacrificing depth. That is a genuine tension. The risk of calling yourself full-stack is that you have average capability across many things rather than genuine depth in any of them. We try to manage this by being honest about what we are best at and bringing in specialist support when the work requires it.

Our engineering is solid but we are not an enterprise software development shop. Our media buying is genuinely competent but we are not managing accounts at the scale that requires a team of ten. What we have is integration: the ability to make design, engineering, and performance decisions that account for each other, which is exactly what most growing Indian businesses in the five to fifty lakh monthly revenue range actually need.

That is the definition we can stand behind. Not everything to everyone, but an integrated capability that does not require the client to manage the coordination themselves.
