AEO vs SEO: what is the difference?
SEO ranks pages. AEO gets you quoted inside AI answers. Where they overlap, where they differ, and why an Indian business still needs both.

The short version: SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links. AEO aims to get a brand or fact included inside a single AI-generated answer. Same raw materials, different target.
Where they overlap
Both reward the same fundamentals: clear, well-structured content, clean technical foundations, and authority earned through citations. A page that ranks well on Google tends to get quoted well by an answer engine, because both systems are trying to surface trustworthy, relevant sources. Good SEO is not wasted on AEO.
Where they differ
The target. SEO gives you a position in a list a user then scrolls. AEO gives you a mention in an answer the user reads and acts on without scrolling. SEO success is a ranking you can check. AEO success is a share of the answers, measured across many phrasings and engines, because there is no single "position one" inside a synthesised answer.
Why you still need both in India
Classic search still drives most traffic for Indian businesses today. Abandoning SEO to chase AI answers would trade a channel that works now for one that is still emerging. The sensible play is to do both: keep SEO earning the traffic it earns now, and build AEO and GEO so your share of AI answers grows as that behaviour spreads.
