What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization explained
A plain explanation of answer engine optimization: what it is, how it differs from SEO, and the one thing about it nobody can honestly promise you.

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the work of making a brand eligible to appear inside the answers that AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Mode generate, instead of only ranking in a list of links.
Why this is suddenly worth caring about
When someone asks a chatbot a question, they usually act on the single answer it gives back. They do not scroll a results page. If that answer names a competitor and not you, the visit you would have earned from a good Google ranking simply never happens. AEO is about being inside the answer, not near it.
What AEO actually involves
Three things do most of the work:
- Structure. Content written as clear, self-contained questions, answers, and definitions is easy for a model to lift cleanly. Long, meandering pages are not.
- Schema and entity signals. Clean Organization, FAQ, and article schema help an engine understand who you are and treat your facts as reliable.
- Citations. The mentions you earn on sources these models already trust are where most of the lift comes from.
The honest limit
Here is the part most "rank in ChatGPT" pitches skip: nobody controls what a language model outputs. You cannot buy a guaranteed mention. What you can change are the inputs the model reads, and you can measure your share of the answers over time. Anyone promising a specific result is selling you something they cannot deliver.
