App Store Optimisation in India: Android vs iOS market realities
India is a dominant Android market, but iOS users punch above their weight in purchasing power. Here is how to approach ASO differently for the two app stores.

India is the world's second-largest smartphone market by volume, with Android commanding over 95% of the market. Yet iOS users in India represent a significantly smaller but often higher-spending segment. If you are marketing a mobile app in India, your App Store Optimisation strategy needs to account for these very different audiences and app store dynamics.
The India app market landscape
Google Play Store is where almost all Indian app downloads happen. India is one of the largest markets for Play Store downloads globally. The challenge is that many Indian Android users are highly price-sensitive and churn quickly from apps with aggressive paywalls or heavy ad loads.
The Apple App Store in India has a smaller user base, but iPhone penetration has been growing as Apple has started manufacturing in India and introduced more aggressive pricing through EMI schemes. The iPhone 14 available for ₹59,000 with no-cost EMI changed the addressable market. iOS users in India tend to have higher incomes and are more likely to make in-app purchases.
This means your ASO and monetisation strategy can legitimately differ by platform. An aggressive freemium model with premium features might convert better on iOS. A lighter model with ad monetisation might be more appropriate for the large but price-sensitive Android user base.
Google Play Store ASO basics
The Play Store algorithm considers title, short description, long description, reviews, ratings, and install velocity to determine ranking for search queries.
Title: include your primary keyword in the app title but do not stuff it. "Groww: Stocks and Mutual Funds" works because it communicates the app's purpose clearly while including relevant search terms. Keep the title under 30 characters for display on most devices.
Short description: 80 characters, shown in search results. This is your headline. Lead with the primary benefit. "India's most trusted investment app" or "Track expenses in Hindi and English" communicates value immediately.
Long description: 4,000 characters available. Use the first 250 characters most carefully, as this is shown before "Read more." Include natural language around Indian-specific search terms: "mutual fund investment India," "UPI payments tracker," "stock market Hindi." Keyword research for Indian apps should include local-language variants and common misspellings.
Apple App Store ASO differences
The App Store algorithm works somewhat differently. The title (30 characters) and subtitle (30 characters) are both indexed for keywords. There is also a separate keyword field (100 characters) that is indexed but not visible to users. Use this keyword field for terms not already in your title or subtitle.
The App Store does not index the full description for keywords (unlike Google Play). Reviews and ratings matter for both stores, but the App Store's review request prompts are better controlled through the StoreKit API, allowing you to ask for ratings at contextually appropriate moments.
For India specifically, the App Store has seen growth in the ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 price range for premium apps and subscriptions, particularly in categories like productivity, health, and professional tools.
Getting reviews and ratings in India
Reviews are critical for both stores and notoriously hard to get at volume in India. Indian users are less likely than Western users to leave reviews spontaneously. You need to ask.
The best time to ask for a review is immediately after a positive experience: successful task completion, a win in a game, a milestone reached. Use native review prompts (not custom in-app screens asking users to go to the store), as these are required by both Google and Apple policies.
Responding to negative reviews publicly matters in India because potential users read reviews before downloading. A thoughtful response to a 1-star review signals that your team is responsive and professional.
Frequently asked questions
Should I focus my ASO effort on Play Store or App Store in India?
For volume of downloads, Play Store is primary. For revenue per user and high-value customer acquisition, App Store may deliver better ROI despite smaller volume. Optimise both, but prioritise based on your monetisation model.
How important are screenshots and preview videos for Indian app ASO?
Very important. Many Indian users make download decisions based on screenshots before reading descriptions. Use localised screenshots that show the app in an Indian context (Hindi language options, ₹ amounts, UPI integration). Preview videos significantly improve conversion rates for both stores.
What keyword tools work for Indian ASO?
AppFollow, AppTweak, and Sensor Tower all support Indian market data. For budget-conscious teams, the Play Console's statistics section and the search suggestions within both app stores give you free keyword ideas. Research what competitor apps rank for using these tools.
