How to set up remarketing lists for Indian campaigns

Remarketing reaches people who have already shown interest in your business. Setting up your remarketing lists correctly is the foundation of a high-performing Indian ad strategy.

How to set up remarketing lists for Indian campaigns

Remarketing (also called retargeting) is showing ads to people who have already visited your website, watched your videos, or interacted with your brand. It converts better than cold audience advertising because these people already know who you are. Setting up your remarketing lists correctly, with the right segmentation and the right window durations, makes a significant difference in campaign performance.

Setting up the Meta Pixel correctly

The Meta Pixel is a snippet of JavaScript code you install on every page of your website. It sends data about page views, button clicks, form submissions, and purchases to Meta, which uses this data to build remarketing audiences.

Install the Pixel through Meta Events Manager. In WordPress, the easiest method is using the Meta Pixel plugin (official) or the PixelYourSite plugin, which gives you more control. Verify the Pixel is firing on all pages using the Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension.

Beyond the base Pixel, set up Standard Events for the key actions on your website: ViewContent (product or service page visits), Lead (form submissions), and Purchase (order completions). For Indian e-commerce, InitiateCheckout (adding payment details) is also valuable. These events are the building blocks of segmented remarketing audiences.

The remarketing audiences every Indian business should have

Segment your remarketing audiences by recency and behaviour, not just "visited website." The most useful audiences:

All website visitors in the last 30 days: broad audience for general brand reminder campaigns. CPMs are low because the audience knows your brand.

Pricing or service page visitors, last 14 days: people who showed strong intent by looking at pricing. These are your hottest prospects. Run a direct offer or social proof ad to this audience.

Lead form viewers who did not submit, last 7 days: people who started to enquire but did not complete. A simplified WhatsApp contact option or a different value proposition might convert them.

Past purchasers, last 90 to 180 days: for repeat-purchase products, this audience is your best source of incremental revenue. Run upsell or cross-sell campaigns here.

Video viewers (25% or 50% complete), last 30 to 60 days: warm audiences who engaged with your video content. Good for mid-funnel nurture campaigns.

Setting up Google Remarketing Lists (RLSA)

Google Remarketing Lists for Search Ads (RLSA) let you adjust your bids, messaging, and targeting in Search campaigns based on past website behaviour. This is different from Display remarketing, which shows banner ads to past visitors.

With RLSA, you can bid more aggressively when a past visitor searches for your keywords. Someone who visited your website last week and now searches for "digital marketing agency Bengaluru" is a much warmer prospect than someone searching that term for the first time. Increase your bid modifier by 20 to 50% for past visitors.

Set up remarketing lists in Google Ads under Audience Manager. The Google Tag (formerly Google Analytics Tag or GTAG) must be installed on your website. You can create lists based on pages visited, session duration, and specific event completions.

Indian-specific considerations for remarketing

Privacy-conscious cookie settings and browsers are less of a factor in India than in Europe (GDPR has no direct Indian equivalent for web cookies, though India's PDPB framework is evolving). However, browser changes like Chrome's cookie deprecation affect remarketing globally. Building first-party data (email lists, phone lists, CRM data) is increasingly important.

Indian audiences often take longer purchase consideration windows than assumed. A 7-day remarketing window might cut off people who are genuinely interested but take 2 to 3 weeks to decide, especially for higher-value purchases like courses, laptops, or home appliances. Test 30-day and 60-day windows and compare conversion rates.

Frequency capping is important. Indian remarketing campaigns sometimes show too many ads to the same people, which creates annoyance rather than conversion. Cap frequency at 3 to 5 impressions per person per week on display channels.

Frequently asked questions

How long should my remarketing window be for Indian audiences?

For impulse-purchase categories (food delivery, event tickets), 7 days is enough. For considered purchases (electronics, education, financial products), 30 to 60 days is more appropriate. Test both and compare cost per conversion.

Do I need a large website to benefit from remarketing in India?

No. If you are getting at least 500 to 1,000 website visitors per month, you can build workable remarketing audiences. Below that, your audience sizes will be too small for efficient remarketing delivery, and you should focus on growing traffic first.

Should I show remarketing ads to people who already converted?

Exclude recent purchasers from conversion-focused remarketing campaigns. Use a separate "past purchaser" audience for retention and upsell campaigns with different creative and messaging. Showing a "Get 20% off your first order" ad to someone who just bought is both wasteful and confusing.
