Display vs search advertising: when to use which
Search ads and display ads serve different purposes. Using the wrong type for your goal wastes budget. Here is how to choose correctly for Indian businesses.

Search ads and display ads both live inside Google Ads, but they work very differently. Choosing the wrong one for your goal is one of the most common expensive mistakes I see Indian businesses make. A coaching institute running display ads to people with no awareness of competitive exams, or a local plumber wasting budget on display campaigns when he should be capturing search demand, both are mismatches that burn money.
What search ads do
Search ads appear in Google results when someone types a relevant query. They are text-based. They show at the top or bottom of the results page. The key feature is intent. Someone who types "packers and movers Pune" into Google is actively looking for that service right now. A search ad that appears for that query is reaching a person with expressed, immediate intent.
This is what makes search ads exceptionally valuable for local services, urgent needs, and high-consideration purchases. If you are a dentist in Chennai, a lawyer in Delhi, or a plumbing service in Mumbai, search ads let you reach people at exactly the moment they are looking for you.
The trade-off is cost. Search ads are more expensive per click because you are competing with other businesses for high-intent queries. In competitive categories like finance, education, or real estate, cost per click in India can range from ₹20 to ₹200 or more.
What display ads do
Display ads are image or banner ads that appear on websites, apps, and YouTube (non-video banners). They reach people who are not actively searching for your product. Someone reading a cricket news article on a media site might see a banner for your accounting software.
Display ads are best for: building brand awareness among a new audience, retargeting people who have already visited your website, and promoting something new that people would not think to search for yet.
The cost per click is lower for display (often ₹5 to ₹15 in India) but conversion rates are also much lower because you are interrupting rather than responding. A display ad visitor is far less likely to buy than a search ad visitor.
When to use search
Use search ads when: you offer something with clear, existing demand; people would actively search for your service; you want leads or sales rather than awareness; and you have a specific geographic area to target.
A CA firm in Bengaluru, an AC repair service in Noida, an IELTS coaching centre in Chandigarh, these are all excellent candidates for search advertising. The audience is already looking. You just need to be in front of them when they do.
When to use display
Use display when: your product or service is new to market and people would not think to search for it; you want to stay top of mind with a warm audience (retargeting); you have a strong visual brand and want to build awareness at lower cost; or you are targeting a specific interest group across the web.
Display is also worth using alongside search for retargeting. Someone who visited your pricing page and did not convert can be followed across the web with display ads reminding them to come back.
The common mistake
Many Indian businesses default to Google's "Performance Max" or "Smart" campaigns, which mix search and display automatically. Google's algorithm decides where to show your ads. This can work, but it can also quietly burn most of your budget on low-quality display placements without you realising. Check placement reports regularly if you use these campaign types.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run both search and display ads at the same time?
Yes, and often you should. Run search to capture people actively looking for your service and display for retargeting and awareness. Keep them in separate campaigns so you can manage budgets and measure performance independently.
My display ads are getting clicks but no conversions. Why?
Display traffic is generally lower intent. Check your placement report to see where ads are appearing. Exclude irrelevant websites and apps. Also check that your landing page loads quickly on mobile, as most Indian display traffic comes from mobile devices.
How much budget do I need to test search ads in India?
Start with ₹500 to ₹1,000 per day for at least two weeks to gather meaningful data. Below ₹300 per day, most campaigns struggle to get enough clicks to draw conclusions in a reasonable timeframe.
