Instagram ads guide for Indian businesses
Instagram has over 200 million users in India. Here is how to run ads that actually reach the right people and get them to take action.

Instagram is not a niche platform in India. With over 200 million Indian users and growing, it sits alongside YouTube and WhatsApp as one of the defining platforms for reaching Indian consumers online. The demographics skew younger and urban, but the platform has expanded well beyond metros into tier-2 and tier-3 cities. If your target audience is roughly 18 to 45 and you are not advertising on Instagram, you are missing a significant channel.
Setting up before you spend a rupee
Instagram ads run through Meta Ads Manager, not through the Instagram app itself. You need a Facebook Page (even if you are mostly an Instagram brand) and a Business Manager account at business.facebook.com.
Connect your Instagram professional account to your Business Manager. Go to Business Settings, then Accounts, then Instagram Accounts, and add your handle. This links your Instagram presence to your ad account so your ads show your brand name and profile photo correctly.
Install the Meta pixel on your website before launching any campaign. Without it, you cannot track conversions or build retargeting audiences, which severely limits what you can learn and optimise.
Choosing the right objective
Meta Ads Manager asks you to choose a campaign objective before anything else. This matters because it determines how Meta optimises your ad delivery.
For brand awareness or reach among a new audience, use Awareness. For driving traffic to your website, use Traffic. For collecting leads directly in the app without sending people to your website, use Leads (using Instant Forms). For purchases or form completions on your website, use Conversions.
For most Indian service businesses starting out, Lead Generation with Instant Forms is the easiest to test because it removes the friction of sending people to an external website. Indian users are comfortable filling short forms inside apps, especially if the form pre-fills their phone number automatically.
Creative that works in India
Instagram is a visual platform. Your ad needs to stop someone mid-scroll in the first one to two seconds. This is not a place for generic stock photos.
What tends to work: real photos of your team or workspace, before-and-after results relevant to your service, short video testimonials from clients (30 seconds is enough), and culturally relevant visuals (Indian faces, Indian settings, text mixing English with Hindi or a regional language where appropriate).
Reels ads are performing exceptionally well right now. A genuine 15 to 30 second video showing a quick tip, result, or process gets far more organic-feeling engagement than a polished studio production. Point a phone at something real and explain one thing clearly.
Targeting Indian audiences
Instagram's targeting uses Meta's interest and behavioural data. For geographic targeting, you can target by country, state, city, or a radius around a pin. For local businesses, use city or radius targeting and do not pay to reach people in cities where you cannot serve them.
Interest targeting lets you reach people based on what they engage with on the platform. Test broad interest categories relevant to your business. Lookalike audiences, built from your existing customer list or website visitors, often outperform manual interest targeting once you have enough data.
Frequently asked questions
Is Instagram advertising expensive in India?
Compared to Google Search ads, Instagram ads tend to be cheaper per click and impression. Cost per lead varies by industry. Education and finance tend to be pricier. Local service businesses can often get leads for ₹100 to ₹500. Start with a small daily budget of ₹300 to ₹500 and scale what works.
Should I boost posts from my Instagram profile or use Ads Manager?
Use Ads Manager. The Boost button on Instagram limits your targeting options and does not give you proper campaign structure, A/B testing, or conversion tracking. Ads Manager gives you full control.
Can I run Instagram ads without a website?
Yes. Using Lead Generation campaigns with Instant Forms, people fill a form inside Instagram without leaving the app. Their contact details are saved in your Ads Manager and you can download them or connect them to a CRM via integration.
