Retargeting ads for Indian businesses: a strategy that works

Most Indian website visitors leave without taking action. Retargeting lets you bring them back. Here is how to structure a retargeting strategy that converts.

Retargeting ads for Indian businesses: a strategy that works

The average Indian website converts somewhere between 1 and 3 percent of visitors. That means 97 out of 100 people who visit your site leave without buying, filling a form, or calling you. Retargeting lets you show ads specifically to those people as they use Facebook, Instagram, and the wider web. It is typically the highest-ROI advertising channel for businesses that already have some website traffic.

How retargeting works

When someone visits your website, your Facebook pixel (or Google tag) places a small cookie in their browser. When that same person later opens Facebook or Instagram, Meta can recognise them and serve them your ad. You are not advertising to strangers. You are showing ads to people who have already expressed interest by visiting your site.

The key difference between retargeting and regular prospecting ads is intent. A visitor who spent three minutes on your pricing page and then left is a warm lead. Showing them a targeted ad with a testimonial or a time-limited offer is far more likely to convert than showing the same ad to someone who has never heard of you.

Building your audiences

In Meta Ads Manager, go to Audiences and click Create Audience, then Custom Audience, then Website. You can create audiences based on specific pages visited, time spent on site, or specific events like AddToCart without Purchase.

For most Indian service businesses, start with these three audiences: all website visitors in the last 30 days; visitors to specific high-intent pages like your pricing page, contact page, or service pages in the last 14 days; and people who started but did not complete your inquiry form or checkout.

Writing ads for retargeted audiences

Retargeting ads should feel different from awareness ads. These people already know who you are. Do not reintroduce your business. Address the hesitation that stopped them from converting the first time.

Common hesitations for Indian audiences: price uncertainty, trust, comparison shopping, and time pressure. Address these directly. A testimonial from a client with a recognisable city name ("Rahul from Bengaluru increased his leads by 3x") builds trust. A clear price anchor ("starting from ₹15,000") removes uncertainty. A deadline ("Offer valid through January 31") creates urgency.

Video ads tend to work particularly well in retargeting because you can deliver more context than a static image. A 30-second video showing your process or a client result is enough.

Frequency and duration

Retargeting audiences are small, which means individual people see your ads repeatedly. Watch your frequency metric in Ads Manager. If frequency climbs above 5 or 6 in a short period, people start ignoring or hiding your ads. Rotate your creative every two to three weeks to avoid ad fatigue.

Also set appropriate audience windows. Someone who visited your site six months ago is probably not a warm lead anymore. Keep your main retargeting window to 30 days for most businesses, 14 days for higher-urgency offers.

Excluding converters

Always exclude people who have already converted from your retargeting campaigns. Create a custom audience of people who hit your thank-you page or triggered your Lead event, and exclude them from retargeting ad sets. Showing a "Book a call" ad to someone who already booked is wasted money and poor experience.

Frequently asked questions

How much traffic do I need before retargeting works?

You need at least 100 to 200 unique website visitors per week for retargeting to be cost-effective on Meta. Below that, your audience is too small to generate meaningful ad volume. Focus on driving traffic first.

What budget should I set for retargeting campaigns in India?

Start with ₹200 to ₹500 per day. Retargeting audiences are small, so you do not need large budgets. The goal is sufficient frequency without burning out your audience.

Should I retarget on Google or Meta?

Both are valuable. Meta retargeting reaches people while they are browsing social media passively. Google Display retargeting reaches them while browsing news sites and other content. Use both if budget allows; otherwise, Meta tends to deliver stronger results for consumer brands and service businesses.
