How to track WhatsApp leads back to your Google or Meta Ads

WhatsApp is how India converts. The problem is that most businesses have no idea which ad, campaign, or keyword actually drove the conversation. Here is how to fix attribution.

How to track WhatsApp leads back to your Google or Meta Ads

India has over 500 million WhatsApp users. For most service businesses, WhatsApp isn't just one contact channel — it's the primary one. Clients message for quotes, coaches convert through voice notes, consultants close deals in group chats.

The problem: when someone messages you on WhatsApp after seeing your ad, the thread starts in WhatsApp with no ad data attached. You can't see which campaign sent them. You can't calculate cost per lead. You can't tell the algorithm which campaigns are working.

Here's how to close that gap.

Why attribution breaks at WhatsApp

When someone clicks a standard contact form on your website, the conversion tracking fires on form submit and sends campaign data (keyword, ad, campaign ID) along with it. The whole chain is logged.

When someone clicks a WhatsApp link, they leave your website and enter WhatsApp. The chain breaks. Whatever UTM parameters were on the URL that brought them to your site are gone. Unless you've built a specific setup to capture that data before the click, you lose it.

Option 1: Dedicated WhatsApp landing pages with UTM-tagged links

Create separate landing pages for each campaign or ad group, each with a WhatsApp CTA link that includes a custom message. The link format looks like this:

https://wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX?text=Hi+I+saw+your+Google+Ad+for+[service]

When the visitor clicks, WhatsApp opens with a pre-filled message. On your end, when that message arrives, you know it came from that specific campaign page because the pre-filled text tells you.

This is low-tech but surprisingly effective. You can get more precise by using different phone numbers for different campaigns (using a secondary WhatsApp Business line), or by adding a booking form step before the WhatsApp button that captures UTM data first.

Option 2: Capture UTM data before the click

Use a lightweight script on your landing page that reads the UTM parameters from the URL and stores them in a hidden form field or session variable. When the visitor clicks WhatsApp, the script fires a conversion event first, passing the UTM data to your analytics or ads platform.

This requires a developer to set up, but it's the most complete solution. You get full attribution data in Google Ads or Meta Ads, and you can optimize campaigns based on which ones are driving WhatsApp contacts.

Option 3: Click-to-WhatsApp Ads (Meta)

Meta offers Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) as a native ad format. The ad itself is in Meta's ecosystem, so Meta can track that the click happened and attribute it to the campaign. When someone taps the ad, WhatsApp opens — and Meta records a click conversion.

The limitation is that you can only see that a click happened, not what happens in the WhatsApp conversation afterward. You can't see if the contact converted to a sale. For that, you need to manually report back to Meta's Conversions API with offline conversion events when a WhatsApp lead becomes a customer.

Option 4: Scheduloo for bookings

If your business converts via appointment bookings rather than open-ended WhatsApp conversations, a scheduling tool with UTM preservation solves the attribution problem at the source. Scheduloo is designed specifically for this: it carries UTM parameters from the ad click through the booking flow, so when someone books a consultation, you can see which campaign, ad, and keyword drove that booking.

This works particularly well for coaches, consultants, and service businesses where the first interaction is a discovery call rather than a free-form conversation.

What to do with the data once you have it

The goal of attribution is optimization. Once you know which campaign or keyword drives WhatsApp contacts, you can:

  • Increase budget on campaigns with low cost per WhatsApp contact
  • Cut or restructure campaigns that drive clicks but no contacts
  • Give the algorithm real conversion signals to optimize toward (rather than just link clicks)

Without attribution, you're guessing. With it, you're compounding.

Frequently asked questions

Can I track WhatsApp leads in Google Ads without a developer?

To a basic extent, yes. Create a Google Tag Manager trigger that fires when someone clicks your WhatsApp link, and send that as a conversion to Google Ads. This captures that a WhatsApp click happened. It won't capture whether the conversation resulted in a sale, but it's better than nothing and doesn't require custom code.

Does WhatsApp Business API help with attribution?

The WhatsApp Business API (used with official BSPs like WATI, Interakt, etc.) gives you better messaging infrastructure and automation, but doesn't automatically solve attribution. You still need to connect your messaging events to your ad data through UTM parameters or offline conversion uploads.

Is there an easy way to know which ad drove a WhatsApp message?

The simplest setup: have different landing pages for different campaigns, each with a WhatsApp link containing a unique pre-filled message. When that message comes in, you know which page (and therefore which campaign) sent it. It scales to about 3-5 campaigns before it gets unwieldy.
