Mid-funnel is where Indian SMB marketing breaks — and how we fix it

Here is the pattern we see constantly. An SMB runs Google Ads or Meta Ads. Someone clicks the ad. They fill out the inquiry form. A salesperson calls them within 24 hours. That is where the trail ends. No follow-up sequence. No educational content. No reason for the prospect to stay engaged between the first call and the decision. Just hope.
And then the client looks at their CRM and wonders why lead quality is so low when actually the lead volume is fine and the lead quality is fine and the problem is the gap between interest and purchase.
This is the mid-funnel problem. And in the Indian SMB context it is almost universal.
Why the gap exists
A few reasons. One, most Indian SMB marketing is bought from agencies that specialize in top-of-funnel. More traffic, more clicks, more leads. That is the metric the client asks for and that is what gets optimized. Nobody is being deliberately deceptive. The client wants leads, the agency delivers leads, and neither party is thinking carefully about what happens after.
Two, email sequences and nurture content feel like a lot of work to set up, especially if you have never seen them work. It is easier to hand the lead to sales and hope they convert than to build a proper post-inquiry follow-up flow.
Three, in markets where relationships and WhatsApp matter more than automated email, businesses default to "we will call them" instead of building a system. The calling is fine but the system behind it is often missing.
What we actually do about it
When we take on a performance marketing engagement now, we include the mid-funnel design in scope. That means a post-inquiry email sequence of four to six touchpoints, timed over two weeks. It means lead scoring so the sales team knows which leads to prioritize. It means a WhatsApp follow-up message for leads who go cold after the first call. It means a simple landing page with a lead magnet, something that helps the prospect during the consideration phase, that we can send to warm prospects.
None of this is complicated. A four-email sequence is not a complex marketing automation project. But it requires thinking about the buyer's journey past the first conversion point, and that thinking is often missing.
The clients who added mid-funnel nurture to an existing campaign saw lead-to-meeting rates improve by 30 to 50 percent on average, without spending a rupee more on acquisition. The traffic was already there. The system to handle it was not.
